Are you looking for a way to keep your leather collars in top condition? This is how I treat my leather and recommend it to my customers.
I’ve gone thru many trials trying to find the best finish that will preserve the colors and keep the leather clean. We hand make our custom dog collars and treat each one with a protective finish, but with regular care, a few minutes once a month will help your dog’s collar look great for many years.
Use a good quality leather conditioner, in paste or oil form, let the conditioner soak into the leather for a few minutes and then wipe away any remainder. The trick is to use it sparingly. A few brands I like are Montana Pitch Blend, Pure Neatsfoot Oil and Dr. Jackson’s Hide Rejuvenator.
Our custom tooled collars require slightly different care to keep the painted colors bright. I apply an acrylic finish to the painted parts which can wear away over time. To keep this to a minimum, it’s best to keep the collars from getting wet and too dirty (no swimming in these collars).
How to Clean a Really Dirty Leather Dog Collar
It really is quite easy here’s how;
- Find a good quality saddle soap that is suitable for ‘wearing’ leather, I use Fiebings’s white paste. A jar of neatsfoot oil is a good idea too, oiling a collar makes it comfy and supple. (Don’t allow your dog access to these substances, for they are toxic if ingested).
- Have a bowl of warm water and a clean cloth or sponge. First, brush any surface dirt away then dampen the cloth slightly and rub it over some saddle soap. Clean the entire collar with the saddle soap, again the more you rub the softer the leather collar will become. The idea is to go for supple not soggy.
- Finally, spend a moment making sure all the saddle soap is gone and when dry polish with a soft cloth. Allow the leather collar to dry completely before putting it on your dog. This method is not for suede.
It’s as simple as that to take care of our leather dog collars, even the smallest amount of cleaning will keep it like new.

The custom collar arrived today and looks amazing! Jessica did a fabulous job, and was easy to work with during the design process. This is a very high quality, well constructed collar. It not only looks great, but will hold up well to daily use. Now our dog has her own "ink" and will be the envy of all her puppy pals at doggie daycare! If you're considering purchasing one of these collars, and are on the fence due to the cost, I assure you it's well worth every penny. This is fantastic craftsmanship, and I'd buy another one in a heartbeat if something were to happen to this one.- Jocelyn Knox
Love it! Couldn't ask for a better collar and leash
Our little Georgie girl loves her color and so do we. I was looking for a deep red leather collar that would fit her today and as she grows and this is the only place I found the leather in the proper red color. I also really wanted a custom name tag to be affixed to the collar. dieselDOGwear was very helpful and led me to a partner vendor of hers that creates name tags ....and then ships to diesel for affixing to the collar. The collar is beautiful, high high quality -- and the tag looks like a piece of jewelry. It will last her forever. Note that although the collar looks a little big now..it's because our boxer pup is still under a year. Also note that although the collar is high quality leather...it actually looks heavier than it is. Georgie loves strutting her stuff in her new collar.
Love this collar! Jessica made item according to a design idea that I had and did an amazing job! Highly recommend her!
Very cute and good quality. Thank you!
